A Surprise Proposal at Kraft Azalea Garden

Kraft Azalea Garden is easily one of the most popular proposal locations in Winter Park, and if you’ve ever been there around sunset, you already know why. The lakefront setting, huge cypress trees, and iconic Exedra monument give you that romantic Central Florida look without needing much else. The garden sits right along Lake Maitland, with the Exedra as one of its most recognizable features.

It’s also very popular for photography, which means getting the Exedra completely to yourself isn’t something I ever take for granted. (And if you want decorations it must be rented out!) For Kristion and Kayla’s surprise proposal, we got so lucky. The monument was open, the plan came together perfectly, and we were able to give them their moment without a crowd taking over the background.

Kristion’s Surprise Proposal at the Exedra

Kristion had everything planned for Kayla, including a gorgeous bouquet of red roses waiting for her. She arrived in the prettiest cream dress, completely unaware of what was about to happen. The neutral color looked beautiful against all the greenery and stone around the Exedra, and the red roses added just the right pop of color.

Once they reached the monument, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes. Obviously. 😉 After giving them a little time to actually soak in the fact that they were ENGAGED, we started taking portraits around the monument and throughout the garden.

But There Was One More Surprise

Kristion had also coordinated with their family, who were secretly hiding nearby while the proposal happened. Once Kayla had her ring and they’d had their moment together, everyone came out to surprise her. I love doing proposals this way because the actual proposal still feels intimate. There isn’t a group of people standing around staring while someone is trying to process one of the biggest moments of their life. Instead, the couple gets that moment together first, and then the celebration starts. And yes, of course we grabbed photos with everyone afterward.

Why Kraft Azalea Garden Is So Popular for Proposals

If you’ve been researching Orlando proposal locations or looking for a Kraft Azalea Garden proposal photographer, chances are you’ve already come across the Exedra.
There’s a reason. Kraft Azalea Garden is a 5.22 acre public garden along Lake Maitland with enormous cypress trees, waterfront views, and the Exedra monument right along the lake.
From a photography perspective, I love that I can create several completely different looks without making a newly engaged couple spend their evening driving all over Winter Park. We can use the architecture of the Exedra, walk toward the water, photograph underneath the trees, and take advantage of the softer greenery throughout the park.
The one thing I always tell couples is that Kraft Azalea is not a private location. The park remains open to the public, so you can’t assume the Exedra will be empty just because you’ve planned your proposal there. You may actually run into three other people also proposing, so that’s something to keep in mind. That’s also why having a plan matters. Timing, where you’re going to park, where you will walk in from, where I’m going to hide and what we’ll do if someone else is using the exact spot all need to be considered ahead of time. Kristion and Kayla’s proposal was one of those days where everything worked in our favor.
